Dungeness crab catch in Puget Sound before release of undersized crabs.

Dungeness Crab

We have become experts at catching crab. The majority of crabs that make their way to our dinner table are Dungeness. My personal favorite to eat as well. We have found that crabbing in the the Puget Sound is more productive during the winter than in the summertime. There seems to be too much competition for these crabs throughout the summer, but the winter months are much quieter. Boating conditions aren’t always ideal, but it’s well worth the effort.

The crabs we capture in winter season always seem to be a bit larger. I assume it’s because they have had that extra time to grow. The male crabs that are large enough to keep, are usually at least four years old. We have found the best luck catching them at about the 40-foot level.

Our family’s favorite recipe is crab cakes!
